The Wingu Group’s Partnership with AMS-IX in Djibouti is now live as the Djibouti Internet Exchange becomes AMS-IX Djibouti

Internet traffic in Djibouti quadrupled over the last year.

A pivotal partnership between Wingu Africa and AMS-IX, one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges, has significantly enhanced the ability of the Djibouti Internet Exchange (DjIX) to meet a fourfold increase in peak traffic over the past year. Following the partnership, DjIX will be known as AMS-IX Djibouti.

The growth of peak traffic – currently four times that of a year ago – at Africa’s premier Internet Exchange is attributed to the recent increase in traffic by several content delivery networks located at AMS-IX Djibouti.

Anthony Voscarides, CEO of Wingu Africa Group, says, “The phenomenal growth in traffic at DjIX is a clear indicator of the increasing demand for reliable and efficient internet services in the region. Our partnership with AMS-IX Djibouti is pivotal in addressing this demand, ensuring that businesses and consumers benefit from improved connectivity and reduced costs. This development enhances the digital experience and supports the broader economic growth in East Africa.”

DjIX’s internet traffic growth marks a critical step in the transformation to AMS-IX Djibouti. The partnership with AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), one of the world’s largest and most renowned Internet Exchanges, brings numerous benefits to regional operators and provides much needed capacity for further development and improved internet experience in the wider region.

Benefits of AMS-IX Djibouti partnership:

  • Greatly improved internet performance:
    • The upgrade of the DjIX to AMS-IX Djibouti brings content closer to the end user, improving the speed and reliability of internet services.
  • Cost savings for international capacity:
    • Businesses and consumers benefit from cost savings as the need for international capacity is reduced, leading to more efficient and economical internet service delivery.
  • Enhanced connectivity:
    • Local and regional traffic routing greatly reduces latency and packet loss while increasing capacity to facilitate better connectivity and support for the growing digital economy in the region.
  • Risk reduction from cable cuts:
    • Localizing internet content reduces the impact of cable cuts while improving performance during peak traffic flows.

Regional and international ranking:
Regarding peak traffic, DjIX is now ranked among the top exchanges in Africa, according to the latest stats from PCH.net. This ranking is a testament to the Internet Exchanges’ critical role in enhancing digital infrastructure and connectivity in the region.

“At AMS-IX, we strive to build better societies through better internet”, says Peter van Burgel, CEO of AMS-IX. “By supporting the local connectivity community and attracting more content providers to the region, we expect to support the growth and adoption of Internet Access in the East Africa region. Partnering with Wingu Africa for Djibouti IX, we will continue building a stable, affordable low-latency internet in the region.”

The partnership between Wingu Africa and AMS-IX marks a significant advancement in the digital infrastructure of East Africa. With the remarkable growth in traffic at DjIX and the enhanced capabilities brought by this collaboration, the region is well-positioned to experience improved internet performance, reduced costs, and robust connectivity. This development underscores Wingu Africa’s commitment to driving digital transformation and supporting regional economic growth.
